Down, synthetic and what the label should say
Winter rows in a KakoBuy spreadsheet come down to two kinds of fill. Down is the soft undercoat of ducks or geese, and it gives the most warmth for the least weight. Synthetic fill is polyester fibre, usually heavier for the same warmth but better at coping with damp. Many jackets also use a mix, and many cheap listings call a polyester jacket "down" in the title. The only dependable source is the fill line on the care label.
Two measures show up in the better listings. Fill power is how much volume an ounce of down occupies after it is fluffed; a higher figure means more loft and warmth per gram. The down-to-feather ratio, such as 90/10, says what share of the fill is down. Both are conventions from the outdoor trade, and a marketplace seller can print them without a test. Treat a precise number with a label photo as stronger evidence than a round claim in a title.
| Listing wording | What it can mean | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| "90% white duck down" | 90/10 down-to-feather ratio | Label photo, fill weight in grams |
| "800 fill power" | High loft per ounce of down | Is the number on the label, or only the title? |
| "Down jacket" with no figure | Anything from real down to mostly polyester | Ask for a sharp close-up of the fill line |
| "Polyester fibre fill" | Synthetic insulation, heavier per warmth | Fill weight in grams, thickness at the sleeve |
| "Thermal lining" | A fleece or brushed layer, not necessarily insulation | Decide if you need a true puffer |
KakoBuy's QC does not test fill. The help centre lists appearance, model, colour, size and large-area damage, with size taken from the label and tag. So you request the evidence: a ¥2 photo of the label, one of the baffle seams where down shows through, and one of the zip and cuffs. Our guide to rows with QC photos explains the free photo set. One cheap check is weight: a jacket that claims 300 g of fill but weighs 600 g in total leaves little for the shell and lining, so ask the seller for the finished weight in grams.
Read the fill on the label, not the title, and request a photo of it before the parcel ships.
Why puffers are volumetric-heavy
A puffer jacket is the textbook case of a light parcel that costs like a heavy one. Down and polyester fill trap air, so the jacket is large and weighs little. KakoBuy's help centre explains the rule for lines that use it: the parcel's three dimensions in centimetres are multiplied and divided by a carrier-specific 5000, 6000, 7000 or 8000 to give a volume weight, and you pay for the larger of that and the scale weight. It also notes that not all parcels on those lines get the volume treatment.
Which lines use a divisor? The estimator text on 12 October 2026 states 6000 for Cosmetics Air Express to the US and Canada, 8000 for UK Air Freight Direct Line (Economy), and 8000 for Canada HG Line-H, HG Line-S and HD Line-electrified. Many lines, including the USPS Tax-Free Line, did not state a divisor in the text we captured, and the quotes are flagged as needing the parcel's dimensions. Lines named "Actual Weight" bill by weight. The practical test is to enter your packed dimensions in KakoBuy's estimator and see whether the quote moves. Our calculator guide shows where.
Because the divisor changes the answer so much, here is a hypothetical puffer in a folded box of 45 × 32 × 15 cm (21,600 cm³) with an actual weight of 900 g:
| Divisor | Volumetric weight | Billed weight | Times actual weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5000 | 4.32 kg | 4.32 kg | 4.8 |
| 6000 | 3.60 kg | 3.60 kg | 4.0 |
| 7000 | 3.09 kg | 3.09 kg | 3.4 |
| 8000 | 2.70 kg | 2.70 kg | 3.0 |
Even the most generous divisor in the table bills three times the real weight. That is why the winter section of a spreadsheet looks cheap in item price and expensive in the shipping line.
Assume a puffer is billed by size until a quote with dimensions proves otherwise.
Vacuum packaging at ¥20: before and after
KakoBuy offers vacuum packaging at ¥20 per parcel, ticked when you submit the parcel. KakoBuy describes the compression bags as meant for quilts and clothes, greatly reducing volume. That is KakoBuy's claim, and we have no measured results for puffers, so the "after" dimensions below are assumed. Everything labelled hypothetical is invented for the sum, not observed.
Before (hypothetical): 45 × 32 × 15 = 21,600 cm³ ÷ 5000 = 4.32 kg billed (actual 0.90 kg)
After vacuum (assumed): 32 × 25 × 8 = 6,400 cm³ ÷ 5000 = 1.28 kg billed (actual 0.90 kg)
Volume reduction: 1 − 6,400 ÷ 21,600 = 70.4%
Billable weight reduction: 4.32 − 1.28 = 3.04 kg for ¥20 ($2.80)
What does the shrunk parcel cost? At 1.28 kg it sits between two estimator quotes from 12 October 2026 (no dimensions entered), so we show both ends. The goods are a hypothetical ¥500 puffer ($70.00 at ¥1 ≈ $0.14), plus ¥20 vacuum ($2.80) and the ¥8 declaration ($1.12). The un-compressed 4.32 kg is above the weights in our quote extract, so we cannot price it, and say so rather than guess.
| Destination | Line | Quote at 1,000 g | Quote at 2,000 g | Total range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK | UK HG dedicated line PT | $16.29 | $29.19 | $90.21 – $103.11 |
| Canada | Canada HD Line | $23.49 | $39.96 | $97.41 – $113.88 |
| Germany | Europe DHL Line (Express) | $23.70 | $39.30 | $97.62 – $113.22 + €3 |
| Spain | Europe Tariffless Line -K | $26.89 | $42.76 | $100.81 – $116.68 + €3 |
| United States | USPS Tax-Free Line | $39.28 | $69.83 | $113.20 – $143.75 |
Vacuum bags also carry risks. Compressed down can need a day to recover its loft, hard zips and buckles can press into the shell, and bags only pay if the line charges by volume. If your line bills actual weight, the ¥20 buys nothing but a smaller box. The cautious method is to purchase pre-packing at ¥18, which reports the final parcel weight within 24 hours, then check the estimator with the new dimensions. The fees page lists every value-added service.
Vacuum packing pays off on volumetric lines; confirm with a quote for the shrunk dimensions first.
Timing: why winter rows need an early order
The delay between order and doorstep has four parts, each from a different source. KakoBuy's help centre says Taobao sellers ship within 3 to 7 days. Goods then travel to the Xiamen warehouse, about 1 working day from the Pearl River Delta, about 3 from the Yangtze River Delta and about 7 from other areas. After you submit the parcel, it ships within 24 hours, and carrier pickup follows within 2 working days, with none at weekends or holidays. Finally, the line transit time as listed by the estimator applies.
| Destination | Line | Line transit | Fastest total | Slowest total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | USPS Tax-Free Line | 7–13 | 12 | 29 |
| Germany | Europe DHL Line (Express) | 8–12 | 13 | 28 |
| Spain | Spain CTT Line | 7–15 | 12 | 31 |
| Canada | Canada HD Line | 7–18 | 12 | 34 |
| UK | UK HG dedicated line PT | 7–19 | 12 | 35 |
An order placed on 13 October 2026 on the slowest line in the table would arrive by 17 November 2026; on the US line the slowest case is 11 November. Add time for any exchange: the 5-day window runs from stock-in, and a swap sends the item back to the seller and waits for the replacement. Free storage lasts 100 days, so you may hold a coat while the rest of an order arrives, but the clock runs. See the storage page for what happens afterwards. Customs delays are on top; read the USA and Canada pages for each country's duty rules.
Order winter pieces at least five weeks before the first cold week, not at the first frost.
Checklist before you submit a winter parcel
- Label photo: fibre percentages and fill line visible, ¥2 if the standard photos missed it.
- Finished weight: compare with the claimed fill; ask the seller or see the warehouse weight.
- Fit: check shoulder and length against a coat you own, with room for a sweater; see the size sheet CSV.
- Return window: 5 days after stock-in, so try it on at once, as set out on the returns page.
- Bulk plan: choose pre-packing (¥18) or vacuum (¥20), then compare estimator quotes with the new dimensions.
- Line choice: check duty-free labelling for your country in the duty-free lines guide.
Hats, gloves and scarves are small and cheap to add to the same parcel, and they cost almost nothing in volume. If you want help with a specific jacket row, scan the WhatsApp QR on the contact page; pay per order, one order at a time. The KakoBuy spreadsheet homepage has current finds.
Fill label, finished weight, packed size and order date: settle these four before paying for shipping.
Questions buyers ask
Is a down jacket warmer than a synthetic one?
For the same weight, quality down usually gives more warmth, but it loses insulation when wet while synthetic fill copes better. Warmth also depends on fill amount, not just type, so check the fill weight in grams if the listing gives it. KakoBuy's QC reads the label but does not test insulation, so the label wording is your evidence.
What do fill power and 90/10 mean on a listing?
Fill power measures how much space an ounce of down fills; a higher number means more loft and warmth per gram. A ratio like 90/10 means 90% down and 10% feather. Both are conventions, and sellers on marketplaces can print them without testing. Ask for a close-up of the label, which costs ¥2, and treat missing numbers as a warning.
Why does a puffer cost so much to ship?
Because carriers bill the greater of actual and volumetric weight. A puffer of 900 g packed at 45 × 32 × 15 cm is 4.32 kg at a divisor of 5000, nearly five times its actual weight. KakoBuy says only some lines bill by volume, and its estimator text states divisors of 6000 and 8000 on some lines.
Does KakoBuy's vacuum packaging really work?
KakoBuy describes vacuum compression bags as compressing the volume of clothes and quilts, at ¥20 per parcel. We have no measured results for puffers, so our example uses assumed dimensions. Ask for pre-packing at ¥18 to get the packed weight before you pay freight, and use the estimator with the new size to compare.
How early should I order a winter coat?
Order at least five weeks before you need it. Taobao sellers ship within 3 to 7 days, the Xiamen warehouse receives goods in 1 to 7 working days, then the line adds 7 to 13 days to the US on the USPS Tax-Free Line. Our table puts the range at 12 to 29 days for the US and up to 35 for the UK.
Can I return a winter jacket that doesn't fit?
Yes, for 5 days (120 hours) from stock-in, if the seller accepts returns and the item is resalable; the first return and exchange each calendar month are free. Tags must stay on. Because the puffer is compressed in a vacuum bag only at parcel stage, you can still inspect and try it on when the warehouse photos arrive.
